Flirtation With Free Coffee Isn't So Innocent,
Some Call it a Crime

Dear Harlan,

Did it occur to anyone that the girl who works in the coffee shop and visits (flirts) with the customers and gives them free coffee is actually stealing both time and money from her employer? Does anyone care?

VC

Dear VC,

I do care. And it's not just because I'm not attractive enough to get free stuff (or maybe it's the ring).

Just to recap, the original letter was about a guy who was getting free coffee from a female employee. He wanted to know if she was just being friendly or flirting. Even if she's being friendly and flirting, she might not be a woman of integrity and honesty if she's giving away something that's not hers every single day. Figure that each cup of coffee is about $1.75. Over the course of a year, factoring in 250 workdays, that's $437.50. When someone steals, which is exactly what giving something that's not yours is called, it says something. If anything, she could have opted for a size upgrade on occasion. That says "there's more where this came from" without giving it away.
