Free Hot Coffee From Hot Employee
Makes Man Percolate

Dear Harlan,

I get coffee every day at the local coffee shop. I always chat with one of the girls who works there. We always talk about music and concerts. Lately, she has been giving me my coffee for free. How can I tell if she's just being friendly or if she is flirting with me?

Cafe M

Dear Cafe M,

One free cup of coffee: She is being friendly. Two free cups of coffee: She's being really friendly. Three cups and breakfast in bed the next morning, and she's being extremely friendly.

I can't tell if you're hopeful that she's flirting or if you just want free coffee. But if you're after more than coffee you can always ask her, "Since you got me coffee, can I take you to dinner?" If she seems willing, you can trust that she's flirting. That said, if you want free coffee and not a date, keep drinking your coffee and don't bring it up.
