Rejection Diary
Drunk Lying Cheater

Dear Harlan,

I did something terrible; I cheated on my boyfriend that I've been with for eight months. I was really drunk at a party, and it was with one of his best friends. Now I feel terrible. I can't eat and can barely sleep. We agreed that we wouldn't tell anyone, but I feel horrible. I don't know what to do. I'm in love with my boyfriend, but if he found out, we would be over. What should I do?

In Love

Dear In Love,

You might be in love, but you're not ready to be in love. If you were, you'd never have done this.

As for your options, you can keep lying or tell him the truth. I say, tell him that you're way too immature and insecure to be in a serious relationship. You know this because you cheated on him, someone you love. Then tell him that you don't expect forgiveness, but you're going to make sure this never happens with anyone else. You're going to work to become secure enough so that you can feel good enough without drinking and looking for other guys to validate you. If you can't get to this place on your own, then tell him you're going to get help. That's the best you can do. When the initial shock is over, let him know that the accomplice was his best friend. Give him a little time. A guy can only lose so much in one day.
